Care Management: Navigating the Insurance System and Helping the Uninsured

Navigating the insurance system can be a daunting task for patients, often causing them to feel overwhelmed and confused.  Frontline healthcare staff must be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to assist patients in gaining and using health insurance properly.

This course is focused on providing healthcare staff information about healthcare reform and healthcare coverage, while also exploring the role they play in educating and assisting patients in navigating the health insurance system.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) led to historic gains in health insurance coverage by extending Medicaid coverage to many low-income individuals and providing Marketplace subsidies for individuals below 400% of poverty.  However, there are still some people who are eligible for financial assistance under the ACA that do not realize they can get help.  In this course, participants will gain an increased knowledge of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The process of obtaining referrals and authorizations is addressed, as well as an examination of the differences between Medicaid, Medicare and Managed Care.  Healthcare insurance programs and provider networks are explored, to facilitate an understanding of how they function for the delivery of services.  Multimedia examples provide examples of how to reduce barriers to care for uninsured and insured patients.
